PC preparation
Over Christmas, your computer may well be inundated with new software and gadgets, so you’ll need to make sure that there is enough hard drive space left to accommodate them. You could either buy an external hard drive to increase your storage space or a cheaper alternative is to delete some programs that you don’t use anymore.
In Windows XP click Start > My Computer to see your available hard disk space. To delete some programs, click Control Panel from the Other Places section on the left. From here click ‘Add or Remove Programs’ then choose ‘Sort by Frequency of Use’. Now choose the programs you want to remove and click the Remove button.
In Windows Vista click Start > Computer to see your available hard disk space. To delete some programs click the ‘Uninstall or change a program’ option at the top of the window. Now click the program you wish to remove and click the Uninstall/Change option at the top of the window.
Sometimes instructions manuals can be a little confusing, and with instructions like the ones we found below, it’s little wonder why we find using technology somewhat harder than it should be!
- A DVD recorder manual
“If the unit is connected with a DV camera, you can also conduct a long time recording to monitor a certain location in an automatic and intelligent way.”
- A TV manual
“Auto Volume normalizes the different sound volume level that can be different in broadcast station. This lets you have adjusted mean value of volume level per channel.”
- A Freeview box manual
“The user can use this item to load default settings, which had been loaded to the receiver at the factory. To install factory settings, highlight “First Time Installation” menu and press SELECT key, then you will be asked to confirm for deleting all channels and settings. Selecting YES and pressing SELECT the channel table will be deleted all.”
