Setting up your computer
Taking a few extra minutes to make sure that your hardware is set up correctly from the beginning can help prevent eyestrain, back pain and worse.
Sitting at a computer for long periods of time can cause aches and pains, especially if the seating position and lighting are poorly set up. If several people use the computer, it is not really practical to keep adjusting the height of the keyboard and monitor so an adjustable chair is the best solution. If you or someone in your family are planning on spending a long time at the computer then it pays to get a comfortable chair. The small of the back should be supported and your feet should be flat on the floor so that not too much pressure is created between the back of the thighs and the seat. Children and small adults who cannot reach the ground should use a platform or small box to rest their feet on.
The height of the monitor screen and the position of the keyboard are important. The monitor should be placed at arm’s length and the top of the screen should be just below eye level. It should be positioned so that room lights or windows do not cause strong reflections as this may cause eye strain. Another cause of eyestrain and headaches is spending too long on the computer so regular breaks should be taken. The keyboard should be placed away from the edge of the table so your wrists can be supported. The best height is when the arms wrists and hands are parallel with the table or angled down slightly. Wrist rests can be useful if you use the keyboard a lot. Drinks and food are best kept away from the computer because accidents will happen. Use refreshment breaks as a reason to move away from the computer and rest your eyes.
Many tasks also involve using the mouse, so it should be within easy reach to the left or right of the keyboard. Use a mouse mat because it extends the life of the mouse and prevents wear and tear on the table surface.
