Home networking

Creating a home network allows you to share printers, scanners and other hardware between your computers, and also opens up exciting new entertainment and communication possibilities.

The benefits of a home network are many and varied depending on what equipment you have in the house. A basic network will consist of two or three computers and maybe a printer. You can share the Internet connection and information between all of the PCs and everyone can use the printer as well. This is going to be ample for a lot of people but there is more you can do with your network.

LAN gaming parties (where your friends bring their computers around and plug in to your network to play games) brings a whole new level of excitement and atmosphere to your games. When it comes to storing
information, you could save files to any computer or special hard drive on your network for safe storage. There are many advantages of having a network but the hardest decision to make is what type of network to get.

With a wireless network, you add the freedom to roam around your house while still being connected to the Internet. You can use laptops, Sony PSPs and PDAs anywhere with-in range of your wireless router to connect to your home network and take advantage of all the benefits. While the standard wired router can accommodate up to four computers at once, most wireless routers support more devices than you can shake a stick at. Virtually all laptops you can buy today come with a built-in wireless card and if you like the idea of your PC connecting wirelessly, then you can install a wireless card into these as well.

Wired networks, while more secure, lack the flexibility of wireless networks but there is a compromise. Network over powerline is fast becoming the easiest way to network your house. Just plug a special adapter into a power socket near you router and connect an Ethernet cable to it. You can then plug another adapter into any power socket and connect to it via an Ethernet cable to get on your network. The second adapter can then be moved to any room to give you the
freedom to surf from all over the house or plug an adapter into every room to give yourself more flexibility.

Did you know?

You can access the Internet wirelessly for free at some pubs, cafés, hotels and in the centre of some cities. In some establishments, you’ll have to pay for it though. Using a laptop or PDA to access the Internet in a relaxing environment like a pub or café can make activities like replying to emails and researching a lot more enjoyable.
