GPS satnav
Knowing where you are and where you're going is quite useful, especially when travelling to a place you have never been to before. Invest in a GPS device and you’ll never need to use a map again!
Using a GPS (Global Positioning System) eliminates the need to rely on someone else to read a map correctly or trying to remember instructions after you have just pulled up and asked for directions. We hear stories that a man will never ask for directions unless his life depends on it, and when they do get lost, turning the radio down helps to gain a compass bearing. I’m sure there’s no truth to these rumours! Anyway, GPSs can also come with a whole host of other features but there are a few things you need to take into consideration when using them.
Your GPS will all but replace looking at maps but it can be
used for much more than that. You can program favourite
destinations into it so you don’t have to plan the route
every time you visit your Granny. You can also pull up a list
of the closest garages, restaurants and tourist attractions
etc. Some will even tell you when you are approaching
speed traps, not that you should really need that feature:-)
You can also get real time traffic and weather reports,
which is quite handy for planning your arrival time.
Some can even play music and audio books to keep
you entertained on long journeys. With compatible GPS
devices, you can also add Buddies and instant message
each other while travelling (passengers only of course) or
navigate to each other.
While all of the advantages of having a GPS are great,
there are a few things to be aware of. You should check for
updates regularly. There are road works going on all the
time and the map that is installed may not show any new
roads or changes. Your GPS can be a target for thieves.
Putting it in your glove box when you park the car might
make it safe, but it won’t help if you still have the suction
cup and cradle attached to your window. A better solution
might be to take the GPS with you and put the cradle in
the glove box. If your car is ever stolen and the GPS is still
in the car, the chances are your home address is stored in
the GPS too. Not a good idea.
A feature rich GPS can really enhance your driving
experience and put some enthusiasm back into long
drives. Even if you use it for its most basic purpose, to get
you from A to B, you’ll find it much easier than reading a
map.
