Digital TV

Digital TV is already amongst us and by 2012 all TV signals in the UK will be digital. Are you ready for the digital switchover?

If you already have a digital set-top box and your current analogue aerial is quite old, then you may have problems picking up a digital signal. If you don’t get a signal or only a very poor one, then you will need a new digital aerial in order to receive a quality reception.

To be able to receive and watch true digital TV, you will need a digital TV provider like Sky, Freeview or Virgin Media, and a digital aerial and an LCD TV. Some LCD TVs come complete with a built in digital tuner, allowing you to watch all the Freeview digital channels without the need
to purchase a separate Freeview box. This is something to bear in mind Digital Tickwhen upgrading from your old analogue TV and could save you an added expense. Remember, before you buy any digital device, ensure that it has the ‘Digital Tick’. This tick ensures that it complies with government standards and will work through the digital switchover.

Once you have your digital TV set up, you will also be able to enjoy the benefits of high definition (HD) TV. The picture quality will blow you away and if you have a surround sound system, watching films on a high definition DVD player will never be the same again.

WHAT IS HDMI?
HDMI stands for High-Definition Multi-media Interface and is simply a way for digital devices to connect to each other (picture and audio signals travel down the same cable). If you have a new digital TV and a high definition DVD player, then these devices will have HDMI ports on the back of them. Using a HDMI cable allows you to connect these devices together to enjoy the best picture quality possible. Also, if your games console has a HDMI port then you will be able to plug the console into the back of your digital TV via a cable. So, if you’re buying a digital TV and you have a few devices that connect via HDMI then you may want to buy a TV with at least 2 HDMI ports built in.

Did you know?

As you get closer to a LCD screen the picture can seem to get blotchy and pixelated. The minimum optimal viewing distance for all televisions is 2.5 times the diagonal measurement of the screen. Therefore, for a 42" screen, the minimum optimal viewing distance is about 9 feet.
