Enabling Wireless on a router
23% of all questions asked using our TechFriend™ service relate to Internet connection & router setup issues. So, this tech tip may be of some interest to you.
If you buy a new wireless router then the chances are you’ll need to enable wireless on it first. This does differ from router to router but the guide below will give you an idea of the steps that you need to follow.
- Connect your router to the mains and to the computer using the network cable.
- Open your Internet browser. If you are using Internet Explorer then click on the Start button then chose Internet from the menu on the left.
- Now type in the IP address of the router. This will usually be shown underneath the router or in the user manual.
- Enter the details supplied by your Internet Service Provider that allow your router to connect to the Internet.
- When the log in window appears, type in the username and password. These are default values which are also present on the router or in the manual.
- Once you have logged into the router you need to browse to the Wireless section and locate the SSID heading.
- SSID is the name that you will see when you search for available wireless networks. Type in any SSID name here.
- The next thing you need to do is to setup a wireless password. This will possibly be under the heading TKIP/WPA/WPA2. You can use anything you want for the password.
- That’s it! The router is setup and ready to allow other computers to connect to it wirelessly.
